The 25th anniversary silver jubilee ceremony of the Burmese Migrant Workers Education Committee (BMWEC), which was established to provide educational opportunities for the children of Myanmar migrant workers in Thailand, was held in Mae Sot, Thailand, opposite Myawaddy, on June 9.
The commemorative event took place at the hall of Wattana Village Resort in Mae Sot.
Mae Sot, located across the border from Myawaddy, is home to numerous schools serving the children of Myanmar migrant workers. Students from these schools who follow the Myanmar curriculum and are preparing to sit for the matriculation examination have been traveling to government high schools in Myawaddy to take their exams.
Speaking at the ceremony, BGF commander U Saw Mote Thone said that although many Myanmar nationals work in Thailand, it is a matter of pride that their children are able to receive an education. He added that assistance would continue to be provided to students when they come to Myanmar to sit for the matriculation examination.
“Regardless of the circumstances, the most important thing is that the children have the opportunity to study, whether in Thailand or elsewhere. When they come to Myanmar to take the matriculation exam, we do our best to support them, including providing food and other necessities. Even though their parents are migrant workers in Thailand, it is something to be proud of that their children can pursue an education,” U Saw Mote Thone said during the event.
According to reports, the Myanmar Migrant Workers Education Committee (BMWEC) oversees numerous schools both inside and outside Myanmar.
