Myanmar’s Ministry of Education has announced on its official website that 252 private international schools teaching international curricula have been granted permission to operate.
According to the ministry, the approved schools were scrutinized and authorized as private schools teaching international curricula starting from the 2024–2025 and 2025–2026 academic years.
Among the approved international schools, the largest number are located in the Yangon Region, where 161 schools have received operating permits. However, since some schools have opened multiple branches under the same name across different townships, the actual number of international schools in Yangon is estimated to be just over 130.
The ministry’s list also shows that 49 international schools were approved in the Mandalay Region, six in Nay Pyi Taw, while additional schools were permitted in regions and states including Kachin State, Shan State, Sagaing Region, and Magway Region.
Some of the approved schools also operate multiple branches in different locations across the country.
The list states that the schools were initially approved during the 2024–2025 and 2025–2026 academic years, with private school operating licenses granted for five years. Schools must apply for license renewals upon the expiration of the five-year term.
Among the schools included in the newly approved list is SCHOLARS International School, a well-known international school in Thaketa Township, which received official approval from the Ministry of Education to operate as a private international curriculum school starting from the 2025–2026 academic year.
