Arakan National Party (ANP) has decided to take certain action against the Yangon Region Minister for Rakhine Ethnic Affairs Zaw Aye Maung for meeting the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services without seeking approval of the party.

Zaw Aye Maung, also ANP’s central executive committee member, met Senior General Min Aung Hlaing on February 13. As he did not seek party approval, the CEC meeting held in late February decided to take action against him for violating the party discipline, said Tun Aung Kyaw, member of ANP’s policy leading committee.

“Regardless of any party member with any rank, action will be taken against them if they violate the party discipline,” he said.

He explained that party discipline violation does not mean meeting the military chief only, but it also means meeting any other person or organization without seeking approval.

“If any member of our party wants to meet State leaders or political or ethnic parties, they have to seek approval from the CEC,” Tun Aung Kyaw added.

He said action would come at an appropriate time.

Minister Zaw Aye Maung could not be reached despite phone contacts on the afternoon of March 3.

The minister together with town elders from Sittway of Rakhine State called on the military chief in Nay Pyi Taw on February 13, the Office of the Commander-in-Chief reported.
