Myanmar Council (MPC) issued a statement on March 31 describing filing a lawsuit against the CEO and chief editor of VOM news agency as “inappropriate” in democratic transition period.
The Central Investigation Department has filed Nay Myo Lin under the anti-terrorism law.
Instead of fighting false news in cooperation with legitimate news agencies in this time of pandemic, such an act is an inappropriate response in Myanmar’s democratic transition period. MPC is doing necessary measures for the issue, the statement says.
When MPC contacted Tatmadaw (Military) True News Information Team, it said the issue was not raised by the military but it was raised by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
A team of people calming themselves to be from CID came to Nay Myo Lin at about 9.30 pm on March 30 and took him away.
The wife of Nay Myo Lin sent a letter to MPC calling for negotiation with relevant departments for her husband’s arrest.
Mandalay Region Special Branch filed the lawsuit against him under Section 50 (a) and Section 52 (a). He is in custody at No.10 Police Station. He is to appear in court on April 9.
The statement says MPC has repeatedly called for sending complaints to it first if any issue arises with journalists.
