Over 100,000 of 300,000 IDPs in Kawthoolei region need urgent humanitarian aid: KNU

A total of 3,845 rounds of armed clashes had occurred in the Karen National Union (KNU)-controlled Kawthoolei region from January to October 2022, and over 100,000 out of more than 300,000 displaced people are in humanitarian need, according to a statement released by the KNU (Central). 

There have been clashes on a daily basis between the Myanmar military and its border guard force (BGF) and troops of Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and Karen National Defence Organization (KNDO) in Kawthoolei region where six KNU’s brigade districts are located, the statement said. 

October alone saw 286 engagements including six airstrikes by the Myanmar army, the statement added.

From January to October this year, there were 3,845 rounds of small clashes and 107 airstrikes. Due to the constant fighting, over 300,000 local people have fled their homes and over 100,000 urgently need humanitarian aid, the KNU pointed out.

In 2021 also, Kawthoolei region experienced 3,152 engagements.
