Like other countries, the number of aging population in Myanmar is rapidly growing and is expected to reach 13 million in 2050, according to the figures from the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement.

According to the 2014 nationwide census, Myanmar has a population of 4.5 million elderly aged 60 and above. Myanmar has started implementing the national elderly working plan since June 2014 and the eight-point Myanmar National Social Protection Strategic Plan including the social security pension for the elderly and assistance to the groups that provide peer to peer assistance, since December.

According to the research paper on the elderly conducted by the Population Department, the number of aging population in urban areas is higher than that in the rural area. Magway, Bago, Mandalay, Sagaing, Ayeyawady, Yangon and Mon see the rapidly growing number of aging population.

The survey is conducted using the 2014 nationwide census. Myanmar’s age formation will be similar to the current age formation of Singapore in 2050. The number of aging population will be equal to the number of children aged below 15.

The population aged 60 and above will account for around 20 per cent of the total population.
