Myanmar’s Ministry of Electricity and Energy says it uncovered 340 cases of electricity theft during its 100-day enforcement campaign, involving the illegal use of more than 7.7 million units of electricity.
The ministry said it has been working not only to expand electricity supply for the public but also to eliminate illegal power consumption through stricter inspections and enforcement measures.
According to the ministry, inspection teams investigated suspected cases throughout the campaign and identified over 7.7 million units of illegally consumed electricity across the 340 cases. Authorities recovered more than K6.745 billion in compensation and fines to cover the state’s financial losses.
Meter owners and business operators found responsible for the offenses are being prosecuted under the Electricity Law. Officials who were found to have been involved have also faced disciplinary action.
The ministry added that it is monitoring electricity usage through control centers, conducting on-site inspections whenever suspicious activity is detected, and investigating reports submitted by the public. It said continued efforts to identify and stop electricity theft will help reduce power losses and enable more electricity to be distributed to consumers, while urging the public to cooperate by reporting illegal electricity use.
