NLD party patron Thura U Tin Oo passed away

Thura U Tin Oo, the esteemed patron of the National League for Democracy (NLD) party, has passed away, as confirmed by a close source on June 1.

"The family confirmed his death at 8:45 am. But the pipes have not been removed yet,” said a person close to U Tin Oo on at 9:48 am. on June 1.

He was admitted to Yangon General Hospital on May 29 and transferred to the intensive care unit on May 30. Despite showing signs of improvement on May 31, his health took a turn for the worse on the morning of June 1, leading to his passing.

In 2017, he faced health challenges after slipping in his home bathroom, requiring ongoing medical care due to his advanced age. Amid rumors circulating on social media on the night of May 30 regarding his condition, his passing was officially confirmed on June 1, marking the end of an era for Myanmar's political landscape.

Thura U Tin Oo, aged 98 at the time of his demise, had a remarkable legacy. He served as commander-in-chief of Tatmadaw from March 1974 to March 1976 and was a key figure in the founding of the NLD party. Born on March 12, 1927, in Pathein, Ayeyarwaddy Region, he held various significant roles within the NLD, including chairman from December 3, 1988, to December 22, 1989, and later as the party's esteemed patron.
