Nay Pyi Taw Council Area has over 800,000 voters, 633 polling booths for 2020 election

There are over 800,000 eligible voters including military personnel and their families, and 633 polling stations in Nay Pyi Taw Council Area for the 2020 general election, according to the Union Territory Election Sub-commission. 

“According to initial data, the Union Territory has 844,909 voters including servicemen and their families and 633 polling booths including ones for servicemen outside the military areas. There will be no polling booth inside the military areas,” said Moe Zaw, member of the election sub-commission.

In the 2015 general election, 34 candidates competed for lower and upper houses of parliament. Among them were one independent candidate from Pobbathiri Township.

For the upcoming general election, there are seven independent parliamentary candidates, according to the list released.

“There was only one independent candidate in the 2015 election. But for the next election, there are four independent candidates in Pobbathiri Township and three in Zabuthiri Township,” Moe Zaw said.

The political parties that had submitted their lists of candidates for the coming election to the Union Territory Election Sub-commission till August 4 are United Democratic Party, National Unity Party, National League for Democracy, National United Democratic Party and People’s Pioneer Party. The Union Solidarity and Development Party has yet to submit the list.

The Union Election Commission has announced basic voter lists at respective general administration departments across Myanmar since July 15.

There were over 700,000 voters in the eight townships of Nay Pyi Taw Council Area in the 2015 general election. The USDP won in Zeyathiri Township mostly inhabited by military personnel. The NLD won in the remaining seven townships. 

The 2020 general election is due to be held on November 8.
