Myanmar, China Hold High-Level Talks to Deepen Bilateral Cooperation

Myanmar and China held a bilateral meeting led by their foreign ministers on April 25 in Nay Pyi Taw, focusing on strengthening ties and expanding cooperation across multiple sectors.

Union Minister for Foreign Affairs U Tin Maung Swe met with Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and China’s Foreign Minister, who is on an official visit to Myanmar. The talks took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the evening of April 25.

During the meeting, both sides discussed ways to further reinforce the longstanding “Pauk-Phaw” (fraternal) relationship, advance the building of a China-Myanmar Community with a Shared Future, and accelerate ongoing cooperation initiatives. They also exchanged views on maintaining peace and stability along the shared border, with China reaffirming its support for Myanmar’s peace process and socio-economic development.

The two countries agreed to enhance joint efforts in combating online scams and other illegal activities in border regions, while continuing to cooperate as good neighbours. They also reaffirmed mutual support in regional and international arenas and committed to expanding mutually beneficial partnerships.

U Tin Maung Swe expressed appreciation for China’s consistent support and assistance, including aid for earthquake recovery efforts. He reiterated Myanmar’s support for the One China Policy and for global initiatives proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping. He also highlighted the importance of stronger cooperation between the two foreign ministries and called for continued Chinese support in Myanmar’s peace process, border stability, and development efforts.

Mr. Wang Yi congratulated Myanmar on the successful holding of its general election and the formation of a new government led by President U Min Aung Hlaing. He reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting Myanmar’s peace process and pledged that China would remain a reliable and trusted neighbour. He also expressed readiness to deepen cooperation, strengthen mutual trust, and implement agreements reached by the leaders of both countries, while expanding joint projects across various sectors.

Following the meeting, both sides witnessed the exchange of documents related to China’s assistance in post-earthquake recovery, including prefabricated housing for monks and nuns affected by the Mandalay earthquake. They also exchanged a Memorandum of Understanding between the Myanmar Space Agency and the China National Space Administration on cooperation in the peaceful use of outer space.

The meeting was followed by an official dinner hosted by U Tin Maung Swe for the Chinese delegation in Nay Pyi Taw.
