Myawady celebrates 86th Kayin New Year Day

Myawady celebrated Kayin New Year Day (Kayin era 2763) at the No-5 ward in Myawady, Thai-Myanmar border on the morning of January 11.

At 6 am, flag hoisting ceremony of Kayin National flag was held and the Kayin history in Kayin and Myanmar languages were read out. At 8 am, ceremony marking the new harvest feast was also held.

At the new harvest feast ceremony, Kayin youths paid homage to Kayin elders and traditional food were served. Kayin elder Saw Motthon then plucked crops hung on the bamboo plant.

A member of the Myawady Kayin New Year organizing committee member said that Myawady usually held Kayin New Year day. He added that In Kayin era 2763, he hoped that peace and stability prevails for not only Kayin nationals but also all the nationals residing in Myanmar.

“New Harvest feast is a Kayin tradition. In the coming new year, I pray that peace reigns in Kayin State and entire Myanmar and hope everyone can work freely and happily,” said Saw Aung Naing Htoo, a Kayin youth at the ceremony.

Some villages in Hpa-an and Myawady also celebrated Kayin New Year, it is reported.
