Myanmar holds meeting to begin work on Kyaukpyu SEZ deep sea port project infrastructure

Myanmar discussed the possibility to start working on infrastructure related to the implementation of the Kyaukpyu SEZ deep sea port project, according to the Ministry of Commerce.

The Ministry of Commerce held a business coordination meeting on January 17, 2024 regarding the implementation plan for the basic infrastructure works to be completed in advance by the Myanmar side for the implementation of the Kyaukpyu SEZ deep sea port project and Chairman of the Central Working Group on Myanmar Special Economic Zones, Union Minister for the Office (2)  of the Chairman of the State Administration Council  U Aung Naing Oo, Union Minister for Commerce U Tun Ohn, Deputy Minister U Min Min, Chairman and members of Kyaukpyu Special Economic Zone Management Committee, officials from the Rakhine State government and officials from relevant departments participated online and offline.

In the meeting, Chairman of the Central Task Force on Myanmar Special Economic Zones, the Union Minister has instructed to complete the project support infrastructures that must be completed in advance for the implementation of the Kyaukpyu SEZ deep sea port project, to complete the work to be carried out by the ministry in a timely manner and to coordinate with the relevant ministries. It is reported that the officials from various relevant departments had a round-table discussion about the issues to be carried out according to the ministry.

According to the Ministry of Commerce, the industrial park project will continue to be implemented along with the construction of the Kyaukpyu SEZ deep sea port project.

If the Kyaukpyu SEZ deep sea port project and industrial park project start to be implemented, tens of thousands of job opportunities will be available for the locals, and most of the management positions will be employed by Myanmar nationals. It will attract millions of dollars in investment for Myanmar, create a lot of tax revenue for the state, and promote the upstream and downstream industries in the environment, which will increase the economic development of the entire country and the GDP per capita of the people, it said.

In the implementation of the project, ethnic businessmen including local Rakhine ethnic businessmen, who have business experience from Myanmar and can really work will be invited to cooperate with the project company.
