Ministry of Health and Sports plans to open new nurse training schools in Shwebo, Myaungmya and Haka Townships during this fiscal year.

For 2018-2019 Academic Year, the Nursing Universities in Yangon and Mandalay have received the enrollments of 501 first year students—230 in Yangon and 271 in Mandalay. Universities will open the first year courses on December 3. Students need to inform the registrars at respective universities starting November 19. The universities will remove the students who fail to make contact until December 14 from the admission lists.

At the end of 2017, the Ministry of Health and Sports appointed new nurses due to a shortage of nurses in the government hospitals nationwide. The government hospitals face a shortfall of nurses as only 54 per cent of nurses join the jobs. Since 2015, the ministry has presented the appointment letters to nurses during the graduation ceremony.

According to the figures until 2017, two nursing universities and 50 nursing, midwifery and related training schools have produced more than 35,000 nurses and more than 37,000 midwives. More than 9000 trainees are attending the courses at respective universities and training schools.

According to the university entrance guidebook, students shall have to attend the nursing university until the completion of course. They will have to perform duties as government staff for at least three years.

Myanmar Nursing and Midwifery Council issues certificates to nurses and midwives. In addition, the council issues two-year licenses to the nurses when they work as government staff. The council is carrying out the issuance of  licenses in accord with its procedures and also issues licenses to nurses working in hospitals.
