Mae La refugee camp fire destroys five homes

A total of five huts were destroyed in a fire at Mae La refugee camp located in Tak province in Myanmar-Thailand border on March 5, sources said.

The cause of the fire is due to negligence. Although the fire made five families homeless, no fatalities is reported.

About 30,000 refugees are living in the camp and they are waiting to live in Thailand or return to Myanmar or to live in third-party countries. The nine refugee camps in Thailand are Ban Nai Soi, Tham Hin, Nu Po, Umpiem, Mae La, Mae Ra Ma Luang, Mae La Oon, No. 1 Karenni refugee camp and No. 2 Karenni refugee camp.

The refugee camps were established in 1984 due to military operation.
