A landslide occurred where authorities had already designated as a dangerous area in Mawchi mining zone, Kayah State on August 24.

It destroyed a place to eat food for monks as well as houses, according to Mawchi disaster management committee and Papwarkalu women group.

“One house each from Zeepinkway, Thapyaypinkway and Cherrykway are destroyed in the landslide. A retaining wall collapsed on the monastery and destroyed the hall. We are clearing the debris on the roads with the help from machinery provided by companies,” said Zaw Lwin Oo from Mawchi welfare association.

“A house owner from satone kone was injured and authorities warned them not to stay here,” said Naw Margret Sein from Papwarkalu women group.

“There are cracks found at the foundation of houses and they can collapse if heavy rain pours down. We warned them but they ignored our warning,” said Saw Sa Nay Doe from Mawchi disaster management committee.

On August 11, a landslide occurred in the area and locals only sustained minor injuries as they run out in time.
