Irrawaddy Dolphin conservation intensified

The authority seized 50 illegal fishing boats and related materials and charged 18 people that fished illegally last year, according to the statement by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).

The WCS is carrying out the conservation of Irrawaddy Dolphin in the conservation area, in cooperation with Fishery Department. It includes the monthly educative program and the survey.

In cooperation with the river police force and local authority, actions are taken against those who do electrofishing and illegal fishing.

The conservation area between Mandalay and Bhamaw along Ayeyawady Region. The conservation area covers more than 80 villages— 24 villages between Mandalay and Kyaukmaung and 61 villages in Malae and Bhamo outside the dolphin conservation area.

A total of 76 Irrawaddy Dolphins were spotted between Mandalay and Bhamo in June, 2018.
