In commemoration of International Human Rights Day which falls on December 10, a movement on long lasting of Myitsone was held at the other side of Myitsone recreation camp on December 9 according to sources.
About 40 people participated in the movement held handwritten posters such as “Those destroying Myitsone are enemies of all Kachin people”, “Myitsone is not owned by one man”, for the long lasting of the Union, protect Myitsone”, “We don’t want any government that can’t protect Myitsone”. Then they said prayers and held meetings.
“The aims of holding this movement are for the commemoration of human rights day, for the long lasting of Myitsone, and not to destroy natural environment near Myitsone. We said prayers for about 30 minutes. Locals, youths, elders and activists participated in the movement,” said a man participated in the movement.
On December 7, youths from Yangon and Laiza held photograph movements under the heading of “Save Myitsone where mother river Ayeyawaddy originates”.
On October 14, 2021, Tanphaye villagers made an objection letter. It said. As there were gold mining in the Myitsone area, locals of Myitsone said Myitsone is a place where entire nationals cherish. Prominent places were destroyed due to gold mining and as consequences, social problems and environmental destructions may occur. Therefore, gold mining were stopped for a while but now with the new heading of: “protecting and beauty of Myitsone” gold mining works were started. There are many bad consequences for gold mining in the area. It will lose the firmness of the earth.
On May 28, 2010, the then Myanmar government issued investment license for implementing Maykha-Malikha and Myitsone dam projects.
CPI Company has carried out 7 projects in Myitsone, Chephway, Wusauk, Phesawm Khaung Lanphoo, Yenan, and Larsar for construction of hydro power project. Because of Myitsone dam project, it’s been more than 10 years that villages near Myitsone dam project had to relocate in the villages assigned by the government. A total of 47 villages, 1904 households, and 10,505 people have to relocate to other villages due to Myitsone dam project and are currently people from Myitsone (Malizut), Tantphe, Shwepar, Kadanpar, Dunban, Laphye villages are relocating in Aung Myinthar and Maliyan villages.
About 317 households, 2075 people are relocating to Aung Myinthar village, about 120 households, 500 people are relocating to Maliyan village and majority of people face hardship for daily livelihood, sources said.
During president Thein Sein administration, Myitsone dam project has been suspended on September 30, 2011 and it’s been more than 10 year that the project has been suspended.
