Three Schools Reopen in Myawaddy After Nearly Four Years of Closure Due to Conflict

Three government schools in Myawaddy Township's Inn Kwin Kale and Mae Kanel villages in Kayin State have reopened after being closed for nearly four years due to political instability and armed conflict in the region, local sources said.

The schools — the Post-Primary School in Inn Kwin Kale Village, the Branch Middle School in Apyin Kwin Kale Village, and the Primary School in Inn Mae Kanel Village, Karen State — had remained closed since 2022. They officially resumed classes on the morning of June 2, marking the beginning of the 2026–2027 academic year.

According to local education authorities, approximately 130 students have enrolled at the Inn Kwin Kale Post-Primary School, around 150 students at the Apyin Kwin Kale Branch Middle School, and about 100 students at the Inn Mae Kanel Primary School.

The reopening ceremony was attended by local villagers, invited guests, officers and personnel from the Karen State Border Guard Force (BGF) Area No. 4 Command, township education officials, and teachers.

Brigadier General Saw Mote Thone, commander of BGF Area No. 4, said that providing access to education is essential for helping children develop the ability to make independent decisions in the future. He added that he was delighted that the three schools could reopen this year to address the educational needs of children whose learning had been disrupted for nearly four years.

The schools had sustained damage from armed conflict, including destruction of roofing sheets, walls, desks, and other facilities. Repairs were funded by Brigadier General Saw Mote Thone, while the Township Education Officer coordinated support for textbooks, school supplies, and student uniforms to facilitate the reopening.

June 1, 2026, was designated nationwide as the official opening day of the 2026–2027 academic year, with both government and private schools resuming classes across the country.

According to Township Education Officer U Moe Kyaw, Myawaddy District has a total of 115 government schools, of which 76 have now reopened. Additional schools are expected to resume operations in the coming months.

He added that seven private schools and five monastic education schools in the district are also reopening during the current school enrollment season. Furthermore, the Thaningan Nyi Naung High School, which had been closed for several years due to regional armed conflict, is scheduled to reopen on the following day.
