A week of relentless monsoon rains and mountain runoff caused the Attaran River to overflow in Kyaikmaraw Township, exceeding the 500 cm danger mark to reach 538 cm. The floodwaters have submerged 6,633 homes across 15 wards and village tracts, affecting nearly 32,000 residents and forcing the temporary closure of 37 schools.

Two emergency shelters are currently housing around 400 displaced locals, while the flooding has already claimed the life of a 68-year-old monk who drowned on August 24. 

Although authorities, rescue teams, and donors are actively distributing food and drinking water, residents warn that prolonged inundation will soon cause critical shortages of medical care and clean water.
