Three Myanmar nationals who were victims of human trafficking in Thailand were handed over to Myanmar authorities at around 10 a.m. on May 18 at the Myawady side of the border, according to reports.
The victims were transferred to Myanmar officials at the Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge No. 1 through cooperation between the Mae Sot Police Force, Mae Sot District Immigration Department, and relevant Thai authorities.
The three trafficking victims — one man and two women — were received by Myanmar authorities, who will arrange for their return to their respective hometowns. It is also reported that Myanmar’s Ministry of Social Welfare and relevant departments will provide psychological support, counseling, and other necessary assistance for their mental well-being and rehabilitation.
Although many Myanmar migrant workers in Thailand continue to face human trafficking risks, a large number of people are still compelled to seek employment in Thailand due to various economic and social circumstances.
In addition, reports indicate that some Thai nationals have also encountered human trafficking-related problems in certain areas of Myawady Township along the Myanmar-Thai border.
The repatriation ceremony for the three Myanmar trafficking victims was attended by officials from Thailand’s Anti-Human Trafficking Division, the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, and Myanmar’s Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, under the direction of Police Colonel Chinkot Asatphum, chief of the Mae Sot District Immigration Police.
