ICOE delegation to visit Bangladesh to find evidence over allegations of human rights violations

Members of the Independent Commission of Enquiry (ICOE) established by the Myanmar government will visit Bangladesh this month to seek evidence over the accusations against human rights violations, said an official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 

This month's visit will be the second and in the first visit, only discussion could be made. 

"During the first visit, we could only be made a discussion. The upcoming visit will include investigation and questioning. The visit may be in mid November or early next month," said Chan Aye, director general of the International Organizations and Economic Department under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 

According to a statement released by the President Office, the commission is tasked with investigating allegations of human rights violations and related issues following the terrorist attacks by the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army in Rakhine State with a view to seeking accountability and formulating recommendations on steps to be taken to ensure peace and stability in Rakhine State. 

In the commission, Former Deputy Foreign Minister of the Philippines Ambassador Rosario Manalo serves as chairperson and Former Chair of the Constitutional Tribunal Mya Thein, Former Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations Ambassador Kenzo Oshima and Former Senior Official of UNICEF and Former Principal Officer Prof Dr Aung Tun Thet as members. 

On November 4, Permanent Secretary of the Foreign Affairs Ministry Soe Han called a meeting with Bangladeshi Ambassador to Myanmar Manjurul Karim Khan Chowdhury in Nay Pyi Taw. The meeting discussed a visit of ICOE to Bangladesh this month and repatriation of IDPs.
