Clashes between the military and Kachin Independence Army (KIA) took place along Moe Kaung-Parhot-Hpakant road in Hpakant township, Kachin State since March 11 morning.

Exchange of fire took place near Gawshi and Nant Haing villages in Moe kaung-Hpakaknt road in the early hours. Military deployed at the strategic point used heavy weapons over Karmaing according to a local of Karmaing.

“Since the early hours, they exchanged fire at Nanthaing and Lawan Kahtaung villages near Karmaing village. It was the heaviest at 8:00 am. Two warplanes came here. The clashes temporarily stopped at 11:00 am. We heard gunshots from Nantyar. Four family members were wounded as they were hit by heavy weapons but said they were not in serious condition. All the entrance roads to Moe Kaung, Hapaknt, Lawar were closed,” said a local.People are fleeing from their homes and staying at the churches.

Concerning the clashes, KIO and northern command headquarters didn’t ask Kachin peace talk creating group(PCG) to intervene in the process, yet. PCG intervened in the June 2019 clashes between the military and the KIA.

Moe Kaung-Hpakant road section is frequent to clashes after the 2011 peace deal failed.
