Myanmar will start circulating a new 20,000-kyat banknote as a limited edition on July 31, according to a statement released by the Central Bank of Myanmar.

The new banknote will be in circulation only in limited amounts, which will replace the existing banknotes of other denominations deemed old and unsuitable for use, the statement says.

Replacements can be made at the Central Bank and other banks in Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon and Mandalay.

The banknotes and coins of other denominations will remain in use, the CBM says.

The new 20,000-kyat banknote will be green color, measuring 15 centimeters by 7 centimeters. In the middle of the one side of the bank note is the image of a white elephant. The unit of value will be shown in Myanmar and English languages.

The back of the banknote features the Ayeyawady Bridge (Yadanabon) and the Sagaing Bridge. It will also carry a color-shift security thread, the statement says.

The plan to circulate the new banknote is to mark the completion of the Maravijaya Buddha Image construction and the first birthday anniversary of the white elephant.
