Aid workers and local residents have reported that that Bago Region, western part of Myanmar, is experiencing the worst flooding in 60 years with some people trapped in their homes by floods.

The rains that fell on October 8 set a new record for the town of Bago. It was a new record rainfall of 7.87 inches, and the previous record was 5.15 inches in 2018.

Following the record-breaking rains, flooding began on the night of October 8, not only in the townships of the region but also in downtown areas.

A local resident said several villages have been in flood.

Moreover, homes in some neighborhoods in downtown Bago are being trapped asking for help to come and rescue them.

"Now the boat is available. This morning the water came up, and the boat was inconvenient. Some are being trapped. Those who could hire boats have moved to safer places. But those who couldn’t have trouble moving,” said a local living on Hmawgan 5th Street in Bago.

It is the fourth time that the town of Bago experienced floods this year.

"There have been about four times of flooding this year, but now it's the worst, and I've never experienced it in my lifetime," said a 40-year-old resident.

An aid worker expressed his sorrow on a Facebook page saying that while there are so many people trapped in their homes, there are no boats to render help.

"There are so many requests for help over the phone, and I apologize for the lack of a boat and little help," he wrote.

According to a live broadcast on the Facebook page of Ko Htin Lin Aung from Yangon, who is traveling from Yangon to Bago to help rescue residents affected by flooding, floods even seen in the center of Bago.

On his Facebook page he further said: “Waves are rough, my car is submerged, and our rescue team finds it impossible to rescue all. We are rescuing as much as we could. The water is running through the city, and it is passing through the city. The water is as deep as a human waist, and in some places it is as deep as the chest.”

Regarding the flooding, some social welfare organizations in Bago are still being contacted, and telephone lines have been cut off.

Additional reports indicate that although the water level of the Bago River is stagnant, there are still floods in the wards of the town.

According to the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, the water level of Bago River may rise by one and a half feet in the next day and may remain above the danger level. Therefore, the department has advised that those living near the river and in low-lying areas in Bago Township should take special care.
