The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) announced that 179 aftershocks have occurred following the 7.7-magnitude major earthquake that struck on March 28.
These aftershocks, recorded up to May 21, were mostly concentrated in central Myanmar, according to the DMH's statement.
Among the aftershocks, some ranged between magnitude 7 and 5, though the majority were above magnitude 3. The strongest recent aftershock—a 5.2-magnitude quake—occurred on May 17, about six miles southwest of Myittha town.
The frequency of aftershocks significantly decreased after April 20, with only eight recorded by April 28. The strongest during this period was a 3.9-magnitude tremor.
In Mandalay, many residents remain fearful, sleeping outdoors at night due to concerns about further tremors.
Meanwhile, on May 19 at 1:45 AM (Myanmar Standard Time), a 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Myanmar offshore area near Kyaukphyu. The quake's epicenter was 90 miles southeast of Sittwe (about 29 miles south of Kyaukphyu) at a depth of 23 kilometers.
This quake was an independent seismic event, unrelated to the earlier major earthquake, and marked the first notable tremor in Rakhine’s waters in May.
