Building collapse injures nine in Mandalay

Nine workers were injured in the collapse of an under-construction building in the compound of edible oil warehouse at industrial zone-2 in Pyigyidagun Township in Mandalay on the morning of September 11.

The steel columns of a two-storied new building collapsed when concrete was being poured into the first floor slab.

The Mandalay Region Chief Minister and officials from the Mandalay City Development Committee (MCDC) inspected the accident.

Zaw Win, the head of the building and warehouse department under the MCDC, said: “The accident occurred as they failed to meet engineering standards. Currently, the MCDC is making an investigation into the cause of accident. Actions will be taken against the constructors in accordance with the law.”

Mandalay District Fire Services Department, Red Cross members and social organizations carried out rescue operations there. The injured were sent to the Mandalay People’s Hospital.

A worker said: “It occurred at around 11 am. There were men on the first floor of the building. The accident occurred while the concrete was poured onto the floor. Some workers got severe injuries. Eight men and one woman were injured.
