A member of the Social Affairs and Management Committee of Yangon Region Parliament has criticised the Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) for issuing a special land grant for a plot worth billions of kyats at Mawata junction in North Dagon Township without seeking permission from the Yangon Region government.

"When we made an inspection tour, we learnt that YCDC issued a special grant. What it means is that they will build a warehouse. This is not an important matter. The plot is within the area of national grid. We found a remark given by electricity authorities that the plot is not in the national grid area. The issuance of a special land grant is only decided by the government," said Yangon Region MP Hla Htay, also a member of the Social Affairs and Management Committee.

He said such a special land grant should be returned as it has not been recognised by the government. It was issued by the YCDC, he added.

"We went to that plot for inspection following a complaint. We heard that there are many similar cases in Dagon Township. If we receive a complaint, we will go and check. A report on the review and suggestions made by the committee was sent to the speaker of Yangon Region Parliament. Again, the speaker will send it directly to the Yangon Region chief minister," said the MP.

The 60-year special land grant was issued for the plot at the corner of Union Road and Pinlon Road in North Dagon Township. Although the plot is worth billions of kyats, only less than K10 million reportedly went to government's revenue.

When contacted by phone, Hlaing Maw Oo, secretary of YCDC, said she would not talk on phone. She also refused to be met personally citing tight schedule.
