One government soldier and four members of the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) have been killed as fighting escalated in Hpakant, Kachin State, according to a senior officer from the Northern Command.
“Now the condition is stable. Government troops conducted an operation to fight KIA forces who abducted three policemen. The police officers were doing their duty to apply security to the region. The KIA’s action is unacceptable. Four KIA members were killed and we seized two guns. One solider was killed and three others were injured,” he said.

Around 500 people and Buddhist monks took to the streets in Yangon on Friday in protest against the United Nations General Assembly’s resolution urging Myanmar to grant citizenship and equal rights to Bengalis.
They marched from the eastern stairways of the Shwedagon Pagoda in Bahan Township to Tamwe Township.

Writer Htin Lin Oo, arrested for insulting Buddhist religion, was denied bail after attending his 5th court hearing at the Chanug-U Township court on January 15.
After the court hearing, he paid respect to the monks and asked for their forgiveness.
The head of the township Immigration Department filed a lawsuit against him under Article 295 (a) and 298 of the penal code after he spoke out against religious nationalism at a literary event in Thone Pan Hla Model Village in Chaung-U Township, Sagaing Region on October 23, 2014.

MANDALAY -- The medical superintended of unlicenced Royal Rose Private Hospital is being investigated while the couple who owned the hospital are still at large.
The Mandalay Regional Police Force is hunting for six Chinese citizens involved in the case of the unlicensed hospital who are on the run in cooperation with officials of the regional police and the Immigration and Registration Department.

About 2,000 locals remain trapped in the area where fighting between government troops and the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) broke out yesterday in Hpakant.
On Wednesday, KIA troops stopped the convoy carrying the Minister of Transport for Kachin State in Hpakant and arrested three police officers who were escorting the minister. The next morning, government and KIA troops clashed near the base of KIA Battalion No 6.

YANGON – Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, chairperson of the National League for Democracy (NLD), plans to go Pyinmana, Yemathin and Pyi Townships, as well as Natmauk, the hometown of her father General Aung San, to attend pre-birthday ceremonies in honour of Aung San’s 100th birthday.
The NLD has already recognised the whole of 2015 as the centenary year of General Aung San’s birthday. The NLD announced that it would hold monthly ceremonies to commemorate the national hero’s 100th birthday. Suu Kyi previously attended pre-birthday ceremonies in Yangon and Bago.

An image of a vehicle with a logo on its back that looks like the flag of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group has been circulated on online social networks recently. Both the car and its owner have been detained and inspected.
The traffic police found and arrested the owner of a car with the registration number YGN 4I-1056 at 195th Street, Tamwe Township, on Wednesday evening.

A new report released by the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission (MNHRC) on January 14 cites the failure of police to abide by regulations on the use of riot gear as the cause of the death and injuries sustained by protesters at the Letpadungtaung copper mine site last month.
Protesters clashed with police and Chinese security agents at the project site on December 22 as police and workers from the Myanmar Wanbao Mining Copper Co (MWMCCL) tried to erect a fence on land that local farmers say was seized from them.

MONYWA – A Senior Assistant Teacher (SAT) from No 2 Basic Education High School (BEHS) in Monywa, Sagaing Region, has been told to leave her home, which is school property, because her husband participated in an event commemorating General Aung San’s 100th birthday, according to Thein Than Maung Maung, the teacher’s husband.
