Bogyoke's student room on display

Room 113 of Bago Hall at Yangon University has been on display for two days to mark the 100th birthday of General Aung San.

Aung San lived there during his university life.

"Marking the 100th birthday of Aung San, we put the room on public display to show how simply he lived during his student life. Anyone can visit the room. Bogyoke belongs to everyone. We have asked for more days for the display," said Dr Tin Maung Thwe, a lecturer from the university.

3,000 villages to be offered loans

As part of the Ministry of Livestock, Fisheries and Rural Development’s Emerald Green project, loans will be offered to 3,000 villages even though there is criticism that loan disbursement is not the right solution to rural poverty.

Workers flee Laukkaing clashes

Thousands of workers flocked to Lashio Town fleeing the Kokang Self-Administered Region in northern Shan State as clashes continue between government troops and Kokang rebels.

Workers from Magway, Natmauk, Minbu, Taungtwingyi, Monywa and Mandalay go to the region to harvest sugar cane from January to April.

Thousands flock to Aung San ceremony

A ceremony commemorating the centennial birthday of the country's most-respected independence hero General Aung San was held on February 13 in his hometown of Natmauk, Magway Region, and received hundreds of thousands of people.

His daughter Aung San Suu Kyi, the chairperson of National League for Democracy, delivered a speech after Sitagu Sayadaw, Myanmar's chief promoter of Buddhism, gave the opening speech. 

6 killed as bus overturns

A bus carrying 34 workers from Laukkai region overturned after hitting a mountain side killing six and injuring over 30.  

The workers, mostly from Myinsu village in Magway region, were returning from Laukkai to their village after their seasonal harvesting work was interrupted by heaving fighting between the government troops and ethnic rebels. 

Three males and three females were killed in the accident while 22 injured workers were sent to Kunlong Hospital for treatment.

Memorial held for murdered students

Former members of All Burma Student Democratic Front (ABSDF) held a commemoration ceremony to honour their colleagues who were brutally tortured and murdered in Parjau region of Kachin State, Northern Myanmar in 1992 Union Day.

The memorial event was held at Myawaddy Min Gyi Monastery located in Pyigyitagon Township. 

Australia scholarship for Myanmar medical students

YANGON – The Australian Embassy in Myanmar is now offering scholarships for 2016 academic year to medical students, medical graduates and those who hold an MSc degree, according to the embassy.

The deadline for application is April 30. 

The Australia Embassy in Myanmar awarded scholarships to 50 Myanmar medical students in 2015 academic year. For 2016 academic year, the embassy has increased its scholarships to 60.

Thousands attend Bogyoke’s birthday celebrations in Natmauk

NATMAUK -- The events to mark the 100th anniversary of General Aung San’s (Bogyoke) birthday are being held in his birthplace at Natmauk Township, Magway Region, starting from February 7.

On February 12, thousands of people including monks celebrated the Union Day in conjunction with Bogyoke’s birthday.

Seven national culture troupes entertained the people with their traditional dances and songs. 

Govt accepts students’ demands in principle

The government has agreed on 11-point demands of students in principle after hours-long talks at Yangon Region Parliament today.

The four-way talks was attended by 20 delegates each from the government, the parliament, the National Network for Education Reform (NNER) and the Committee for Democracy Education Movement (CDEM).

Parliament marks General Aung San’s centennial birthday

The Union parliament today marked the centennial birthday anniversary of General Aung San which will fall on Feb 13, at the parliament's Thabin Hall in Nay Pyi Taw. 

MPs from political parties as well as defence services personnel representatives read papers about General Aung San.
