Heavy rain is forecast across much of Myanmar, including the Ayeyawady Region, from 5 to 8 August as the monsoon strengthens over the Andaman Sea and the southern Bay of Bengal, according to the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH).
Based on observations at 6:30 am Myanmar Standard Time on 5 August, the DMH said strengthening monsoon winds and intensified cloud development are expected to bring widespread thundershowers across Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon, Mandalay, Bago, Magway, Sagaing, Ayeyawady and Taninthayi regions, as well as Kachin, Kayah, Kayin, Chin, Mon, Rakhine and Shan states. Some areas are likely to experience isolated heavy rainfall.
The department also warned of occasional squalls and rough seas over the Gulf of Mottama, the Mon-Taninthayi coast and offshore waters. During squalls, winds could reach up to 30 mph, while waves may rise to between 8 and 10 feet.
Moderate to rough seas are also expected along the Ayeyawady Delta and Rakhine coast, where winds may reach 25 to 30 mph and waves could rise to between 7 and 9 feet.
The DMH warned that heavy rainfall could trigger strong winds, flash floods and landslides. Residents living in hilly areas and near small rivers and streams have been advised to remain vigilant, while domestic airlines and vessels operating along Myanmar’s coastline and offshore waters have also been urged to take precautionary measures.
