Myanmar traditional snacks competition to award stalls and start-up capital

A Myanmar traditional snacks competition will be held on January 31, with winners to receive a standard food stall and start-up capital depending on the type of business, according to organizers.

The competition will take place from 9:00 am. to 5:00 pm. at Pearl Island (Ngwe Thauk Yan area) inside Myay Padetha Island, Bahan Township. It is being organized by the Association of Myanmar–Japan Social and Economic Development Cooperation (AMJSEDC) with the aim of reviving Myanmar traditional snacks and reducing reliance on imported ready-to-eat food products.

Participants may compete using a wide range of Myanmar traditional foods and snacks, including Mohinga, coconut milk noodles, Sihtamin, shwe htamin, htamane, mont let saung, bread with coconut milk, mont lone gyi kyaw, mont let kauk kyaw, assorted fritters, glutinous rice parcels, mont phat htoat, sago leaf-wrapped snacks, sago pudding, steamed green snacks, mont byine taung, sanhnwin makin, mont kyway thee, poppy seed cakes, toddy palm fruit snacks, butterfly-shaped snacks, mont kya khwet, mont lin maya, hand-pressed snacks, as well as traditional ethnic foods.

The competition is open to all sellers of Myanmar traditional snacks. Judges will prioritize aroma, taste, and cleanliness. Applicants must be actively engaged in selling Myanmar traditional snacks on the ground and be committed to continuing the business.

Detailed competition rules and judging criteria will be sent in advance to registered participants.

In each category of traditional snacks, three finalists will be selected for preliminary screening. After health inspections, one winner from each category who demonstrates hygienic and high-quality food preparation will be awarded a standard food stall for selling snacks, along with start-up capital provided by AMJSEDC. The amount of financial support will vary depending on the type of business, organizers said.
