Residents reported that an elderly woman suffering from mental illness jumped into a well within a residential compound in Thaton but was later rescued alive.

The incident occurred around 6 a.m. on May 13 in Manawthukha Street, Nangkhe Ward, Thaton Township. A 67-year-old woman with a mental health condition reportedly jumped into a 25-foot-deep well inside the compound, according to a local resident.

"Authorities, including the fire service department and social rescue teams, were immediately notified," the resident said. "The woman held onto the well’s rope bucket, preventing herself from drowning. Rescue teams arrived quickly, descended into the well, and successfully pulled her out alive."

The rescue operation was carried out jointly by the Thaton District and Township Fire Service Departments, along with local social aid groups. The woman was retrieved by 6:10 a.m.

She was then transported by a humanitarian ambulance to the Thaton District People’s Hospital for further care.

A similar incident occurred on October 15, 2023, when a 43-year-old man with mental health issues jumped into a well in Leik Inn Ward, Thaton. Despite rescue efforts, he drowned.
