The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology has announced that the southwest monsoon is expected to enter southern Myanmar between May 12 and 14, bringing locally heavy rainfall to some areas.

Weather officials report the monsoon will first affect southern regions from May 12-14 before extending to delta areas between May 15-18. By May 19-24, the monsoon system is forecast to reach central parts of the country.

Atmospheric instability over the Andaman Sea and southern Bay of Bengal, combined with monsoon conditions and strong convective cloud development, is expected to trigger scattered to widespread thundershowers across much of Myanmar from May 11-18. The affected areas include Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon, Mandalay, Bago, Magway, Sagaing, Ayeyarwady and Tanintharyi regions, as well as Kachin, Kayah, Kayin, Chin, Mon, Rakhine and Shan states. Some locations may experience isolated heavy downpours.

Authorities have warned of potential severe weather impacts including strong winds, thunderstorms, lightning strikes, hail, flash floods and landslides. Residents in hilly areas should be particularly alert for possible landslides, while those living near small rivers and streams should prepare for potential flooding. The department also advised caution for inland waterway transport and air travel during this period.
