Senior monk killed by gunfire in Kayin State’s Kawkareik Township

According to local news sources, the abbot of Hlaing Kwe Monastery in Hlaing Kwe village, Yepugyi village-tract, Kawkareik Township, Kayin State, Venerable U Thuzata, was shot and killed.  

A local resident reported that clashes broke out on the morning of May 9 between Hlaing Kwe and Koe Tine villages in Kawkareik Township, and the monk was fatally struck by gunfire during the fighting.  

The resident further stated, "Although the monk was rushed to a nearby hospital by ambulance, he succumbed to his gunshot wounds and passed away."  

The 56-year-old monk, who had 35 years of monastic life, previously taught scriptures at the town monastery in Kawkareik before residing as the abbot of Hlaing Kwe Monastery. He was struck by gunfire and died under these circumstances.  

Additionally, locals reported that intense clashes between the military and joint forces of the KNU/KNLA continue in Kawkareik Township as of May 8.
