The State Administration Council (SAC) has granted a health-related pardon to former Minister of Electricity and Energy U Win Khaing, who is currently serving a 28-year prison sentence in Obo Prison on corruption charges.
U Win Khaing, who served as Minister of Electricity and Energy during the NLD government, was reportedly granted the pardon on October 28 while receiving treatment at Mandalay General Hospital for health issues.
This information was shared by sources close to him with some foreign news agencies.
Although reports indicate that U Win Khaing was receiving intensive care treatment in the ICU of Mandalay General Hospital due to poor health, The Daily Eleven has been unable to independently verify these claims.
According to an anonymous source, U Win Khaing, who was unconscious in the ICU, received the pardon order in person when authorities arrived at the hospital on the evening of October 28, as reported to RFA.
U Win Khaing was initially arrested in February 2021 and sentenced to 28 years in prison on December 8, 2021, under Article 55 of the Anti-Corruption Law for allegedly causing a loss of around 6 billion kyats in public funds.
During the NLD administration, U Win Khaing was first appointed as Minister of Construction and, in 2018, was designated as the Minister of Electricity and Energy following the resignation of then-Minister U Pe Zin Tun.
