Mon State Parliament Speaker U Thet Htwe has been elected chairman of the Mon State chapter of the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), according to sources.

He was elected during the reorganization and selection of the Mon State USDP Executive Committee held at the party’s state office in Mawlamyine on September 14.

U Myo Min Hlaing, Mon State Government’s Minister for Bamar Ethnic Affairs, was also elected secretary of the Mon State USDP.

Party members and officials attended the meeting, where 15 executive committee members and 15 alternate executive committee members were elected from among 40 nominees for the state committee.

Among the 15 newly selected state committee members are Mon State Minister for Social Affairs U Tin Zaw Tun, Amyotha Hluttaw representatives U Kyaw Kyaw Lin, also known as Htein Lin, representing Mawlamyine/Kyaikmaraw, Daw Zin Thwe Win and Daw Nwe Ni Win, according to a source close to the party.

“The executive committee members were freely elected by those who attended the meeting,” the source said.

U Aung Kyi Thein, who previously served as chairman of the Mon State USDP and Mon State Chief Minister, was not re-elected to the state executive committee and will remain a party member, the source said.

U Thet Htwe, who has been elected chairman of the Mon State USDP, is also expected to be assigned as a member of the party’s Central Executive Committee.
