Bridge collapse in Kayin State causes major disruptions

Incessant rain from the night of June 8 to the morning of June 9 led to the collapse of a bridge at the entrance of Mae Htaw Thalay village on the Myawady-Walaymyaing road in Myawady Township, Kayin State.

The heavy rainfall caused significant water erosion, rendering the bridge impassable for vehicles.

The bridge, which connects several nearby villages to Myawady town, was essential for local travel and commerce.

Daw Thein Oo, a shop owner in Ingyin Myaing village, expressed her frustration: “As the bridge was broken down, we can’t go to Myawady town for shopping. Some people went to Myawady town by leaving their cars at the villages. However, it was inconvenient for the villagers to carry their products.”

In response to the disaster, a temporary wooden bridge has been erected for pedestrian use. Villagers now leave their cars and motorbikes on the other side and continue their journeys on foot.

This is not the first time the bridge has faced such an issue. About five years ago, the bridge collapsed due to water erosion and was subsequently rebuilt.
