The National Solidarity and Peace Negotiation Committee (NSPNC) led by Lt-Gen Yar Pyae and the Kachin Peace-Talk Creation Group (PCG), Kachin religious leaders met in Nay Pyi Taw on November 1 to discuss the return of Kachin refugees, said PCG member La Mai Gon Ja.

“We, religious groups in Myitkyina, Kachin State, are discussed for the return of IDPs. The military government is working to ensure that IDPs return to their homes. These IDPs focus on how to provide the materials needed to build the facilities. They are church members. These religious leaders are called because they are their people. We made a discussion about how to help them to return home,” said La Mai Gon Ja of the PCG.

The PCG escorted Kachin religious leaders to attend the meeting, which was held at the NSPNC in Nay Pyi Taw, he said.

Under the previous government, the government, Tatmadaw and Kachin religious groups had met to discuss the implementation of the plan the return of Kachin refugees and this meeting is a way to resume the process, he said.

"It started before. It is like we are discussing about what extent religious groups are doing, what else is needed and how we can provide assistance,” he said.

Fighting between the Tatmadaw and the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) in Kachin State in 2011 has forced large numbers of people to flee their homes.

With more than ten years of Kachin refugees being displaced, the NSPNC has meeting with Kachin religious leaders to discuss the issues about how the Tatmadaw can assist the IDPs in the previous government's resettlement process, he added.

Lt-Gen Yar Pyae, Chairman of the National Unity and Peace Coordination Committee and Minister for Union Government Office (1), and members of the committee and Pastors from Christian churches in Kachin State attended the meeting and the joint secretary and officials of the Kachin Baptist Church (KBC) attended the meeting via video conference, according to the Ministry of Information.
