A lawmaker representing Hsipaw Township has questioned how the government plans to curb illegal trade and corruption allegedly linked to the continued closure of the Hsipaw Bridge.

During the 31st day of the second regular session of the third Pyithu Hluttaw on July 28, MP U Kaung Thet San said the bridge closure had encouraged large-scale illegal trade worth tens of millions of kyats each day, while also contributing to corruption, illegal arms trafficking, and cross-border online scam activities.

He also asked when local residents, vehicles, and goods would be allowed to use the bridge again, warning that the closure has disrupted access to healthcare, education, and public services.

Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Maj-Gen Min Thu responded that authorities investigate reports of corruption and illegal trade and take effective legal action whenever violations are found. He added that restoring stability requires cooperation between security forces and local residents, urging the public to provide information on the activities of armed groups, including the TNLA, MNDAA, and PDF.
