A jade stone weighing one and a half tones was found at the Whaykhahmaw old jade mining site where nearly 200 people died last July in a landslide, according to locals and authorities.

It was found last few days and responsible people from the jade digging site, police office and military are protecting the jade according to Whaykha village administrator Kyaw Min.

He said that the jade was huge and found by the scavengers. But, now it is under the hands of the police office and military for protection. It is a kind of jade but not very precious and expensive one. It was found near the village according to Kyaw Min.

According to the official data, when an army captain and a police officer carried out patrol on the illegal jade mining site, it was found  without any owners. Arrangements are being made for the transportation of the jade to Lone Lhin/Phakant jade mining department.

The place where the jade was found was the place where a landslide occurred on July 2 and over 170 people died and nearly 20 were missing at the place.

There is only one jade mining site in Whaykha and it is the place where various groups were digging at the site. It is best to transfer to the government when a jade over a ton was found,” said one of the Kachin State cabinet members.
