Around 200,000 foreign tourists entered Myanmar through Yangon, Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw international airports in December 2019 exceeding over 50,000 compared with the same period of the year before, according to the Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Population.
Last December saw 193,864 international tourists while December 2018 saw 149,705. Like the increased arrivals of tourists through airports, the number of tourist arrivals through border point of entry increased as well, according to ministry data.
Since October 1 last year, Myanmar has allowed visa on arrival for travellers from Australia, Italy, Spain, Germany, Russia and Switzerland holding ordinary passports if they come through the three international airports.
The visa on arrival is allowed as a one-year trial period. A tourist needs to pay US$50 for visa fee and can stay in Myanmar for 30 days. Such a kind of visa on arrival is called tourist visa. Visa extension is unavailable and tourists will not be allowed to go to the areas restricted for security reasons.
Japanese and South Korean tourists have been enjoying free visa since October 1, 2018. Since that day, Chinese citizens, including those from Hong Kong and Macao have been allowed visa on arrival.
Myanmar allows e-visa applications for over 100 countries and visa on arrival for 67 countries.
