A bridge on Hpa-an-Thaton Road was mined on the early morning of July 10 stopping traffic, according to local sources.

The bridge (No.1/13) is located on Hpa-an-Thaton Road near Guwa Village in Naungkyan Village-tract, Hpa-an Township, Kayin State.

A local resident said an explosion was heard around 1am today (July 10). Due to the blast, the lower structure and railings of the bride were damaged while cracks appeared in its ceiling.

“The bridge now seems to wobble after the mine blast. So, no traffic including motorcycles is allowed because the bridge may collapse,” he added.

According to highway drivers, as the bridge serves as a trade route for Myawady, Hpa-an, Thaton and Yangon, cargo trucks running between Hpa-an and Thaton had to stop their operation while small vehicles have to run via Mawlamyine.

Yet, latest reports say that motorcycles and small private cars have been allowed to pass over the bridge.
