Traffic accident in Bago mountain range leaves 15 dead and 25 injured

A six-wheeled truck skidded on a road in Bago mountain range, plunging into a 200 feet deep ravine on March 30 causing 15 deaths and 25 injuries, according to Oktwin Township police station.

The truck is carrying more than 40 workers including children and it plunged into a ravine near Kyatsharyar Village, Pauktaw village tract, Oktwin Township.

A total of 13 bodies were recovered initially while two persons were trapped beneath the truck. The rescue teams had to try many hours to free them.

Two more died at the hospitals and total death tolls reached 15 till March 31.

“A total of 16 wounded were sent to Taungoo Hospital while four others had to be left here. Six bodies are sent to Oaktwin and one more patient died on the way. Six more bodies are left at a place where the accident took place. One body is pinned under the truck. Two or three injured persons are in emergency conditions,” said Ashin Tayza from Oaktwin civic society team.

The workers from Kyaukpadaung Township and they had been hired to dig pits to build telecommunication towers for Mytel.

Police Sub-inspector Kyaw Zawl lodged a complaint against the driver Toe Maung aka Aung Thu Ya under Section 304 (a)/ 337/ 338 of the Penal Code at Oaktwin Township police station.
