The tornado and strong winds have damaged buildings, including schools, in some townships in Mon State, according to locals.
A tornado hit the northern part of Ahlae Village of Naung Kalar village tract in Thaton Township at around 7 am on July 24, damaging more than 50 houses and causing the roof of a high school to topple, a local said.
He continued, “A lot of trees were also uprooted. It was a tornado. If it was a strong wind, the entire village could have been destroyed, but there are houses that have been hit now, and there are houses that have not been damaged. There are no injuries.”
The local said that the Myanmar Fire Services Department, Thaton Township-based social assistance and relief organizations, and locals are currently cleaning up the damage caused by the tornado.
Similarly, on July 24 at around 7:45 am, a tornado struck the Yangon-Mawlamyine Road in Paung Township, causing large trees and lampposts to fall on both sides of the road from mileposts 171/7 to 172/3 for about four furlongs, blocking the road, and causing roofs to be blown off.
“In Paung Township, the tornado also damaged more than 100 houses in the Karen Su section of Moe Nine ward and Dawei Su section of Paung ward. In addition, almost all the durian and mangosteen trees in the orchards along the slopes of Moe Nine ward and Paung ward were uprooted and destroyed,” said a local.
A woman from Win Khalon section of Paung ward, Paung Township, was injured in the incident and was taken to Paung Township General Hospital, the local said.
The damage is being cleared by the army, the police, the fire brigade members, the social assistance and relief teams, and the local people.
In addition, at around 4:45 pm on July 23, a strong wind caused the collapse of the old building of the Basic Education Post-Primary School (Aung Kutho) in Wel Ka War Village Tract, Thanbyuzayat Township, and at least 35 houses in the area were damaged, according to a local.
“Two young girls were injured when the old school building collapsed and were taken to Thanbyuzayat Township Public Hospital. Their injuries are not serious,” the local continued.
In addition, on July 23, heavy rain and strong winds caused to uproot trees in Panbedan, Myaing Tharyar, Maung Ngan, Mupun and Shwe Myaing Thiri wards and the fire brigade members, along with local social relief groups and residents, have been working together to clear the area after trees fell in.
On July 22, at around 2:30 pm, strong winds blew off the roofs of two houses in King Seik Village, Hnit Kayin Village Tract, Ye Township, and lampposts and trees fell in Abow Village, Ye Township, according to locals.
