The final verdict in the case against President U Win Myint, State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and Nay Pyi Taw Council Chairman Dr Myo Aung charged under Section 505 (b) of the Penal Code was passed today.

The three appeared in a special court within the Nay Pyi Taw Council today.

The court sentenced them to two years each in prison, according to a source close to the court.

Moreover, President U Win Myint and State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi were sentenced two years each in prison for their charge under Section 25 of the Natural Disaster Management Law, the source said.

These sentences were the first for the three to receive among the several charges against them.

In the charge under Section 505 of the Penal Code, the President, the State Counsellor and Dr Myo Aung themselves acted as defence witnesses without calling in other witnesses.

The Section 505 charges against them were related to the statements released by the central executive committee of the National League for Democracy on February 7 and 13 in 2021, the source pointed out.

The charges under Section 25 of the Natural Disaster Management Law were related to an incident on September 20, 2020. Led by District National League for Democracy chairman Min Thu, about 760 supporters went round in 220 cars and on 32 motorbikes in the Nay Pyi Taw Council area for election campaigning. On the way, the convoy stopped over the gate of the residence of the State Counsellor to receive welcome without following the Covid-19 prevention rules issued by the Ministry of Health, the source said.
