SAC Chair and Russian FM meet in Naypyidaw

SAC Chair Senior General Min Aung Hlaing and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met in Naypyidaw on August 3rd (Wednesday). The Russian Foreign Minister backed the State Administrative Council’s efforts to stabilize the crises within the country.

 

"We are in solidarity with the efforts (by the ruling military) aimed at stabilising the situation in the country," Sergei Lavrov said during talks in Myanmar's capital Naypyidaw, according to the TASS news agency.

 

"Next year, you will hold legislative elections and we wish you success in making your country even stronger and more prosperous," Lavrov added, referring to proposed August 2023 elections 

 

The Russian FM arrived in Myanmar for a “working visit” on the morning of August 3rd and met with his Myanmar counterpart U Wunna Maung Lwin before meeting with Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.    

 

According to the statement by the Russian MFA, “There was a discussion on a wide range of issues of Russian-Myanmar relations, including political dialogue, trade and investment relations, cooperation in the field of defense and security, humanitarian exchanges. The practical aspects of the cooperation will be discussed during the 3rd meeting of the Russian-Myanmar Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation scheduled for the second half of the year.“

 

After Lavrov’s visit to Myanmar, he is scheduled to attned the ASEAN foreign minister’s meeting in Cambodia.
