Some critical remarks that Myanmar may not see a free and fair election cannot be described as ‘incorrect’, said Thura U Shwe Mann, chairman of Union Betterment Party.

He made the comment after a reporter asked for his opinion as some political parties assume that the election will be less free and fair because it will take place during the Covid-19 crisis.

Shwe Mann was returning from the polling station (2) of Nyaungbingyisu Village  Post-Primary School in Nay Pyi Taw Pobbathiri Township to cast his advance ballot on the morning of October 29.

“We cannot say their concept is wrong. The Union Election Commission itself has difficulty with election preparations  as we are in the Covid-19 crisis. The important thing is that there will be a free and fair election if the commission holds it in accord with its five criteria. Whether it can do this is a main problem. We have to try super hard to make sure a free and fair election,” Shwe Mann commented.

He stressed the need for everyone to vote adding that election is meant for the emergence of a government capable of serving the national interest and it is also an occasion to choose a better government.

Union Betterment Party is fielding 927 candidates in 261 townships across the country.

Shwe Mann said his party hopes to win 40 to 50 percent.

“As ours is a party that will better serve. Our party should be voted for. Change is really necessary. But it must be a positive change. If a party has a benevolent attitude, experience and suitable qualifications, that party should be voted and then there will be a better change,” he said.

Retired Senior General Than Shwe is due to vote in the same constituency, but he may vote at home due to the Covid-19 outbreak and the restrictions in his neighborhood, said Hla Ngwe, chairman of Nyaungbingyisu Village  Election Sub-commission.
