KYOTO — An international conference on museums wrapped up Saturday with a resolution stating that museums around the world should play a central role as “cultural hubs” for exchanges that transcend differences in generations, countries and academic fields.

The resolution adopted at the 25th general conference of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) held in Kyoto also called for cooperation with Asian museums, strengthening efforts for achieving a sustainable future, and safe management of collections, among others.

Taking into consideration the recent succession of natural disasters that have occurred around the world, the conference decided to establish a committee to study responses to such catastrophes. It will among the international committees set up in each field.

“We were able to instill the spirit of the council and hold discussions that will have far-reaching effects,” Johei Sasaki, director of the Kyoto National Museum and president of ICOM Kyoto 2019 Organizing Committee, said at a press conference after the closing. “It was a better-than-expected success.”

A record 4,590 participants from 120 countries and territories participated in this year’s conference, the first-ever held in Japan.
