Powerful earthquake causes heavy casualties in Myanmar

According to reports as of the morning of April 1st, a devastating earthquake has resulted in 2,719 deaths, 4,521 injuries, and 441 missing persons.

Chairman of the State Administration CouncilSenior General Min Aung Hlaing announced the updated casualty figures caused by the earthquake yesterday morning.

During a donation ceremony held in Nay Pyi Taw Council Area for earthquake victims, the Senior General reiterated the impact of the disaster, stating, "According to the latest reports I have received, as being on the morning of April 1, a total of 2,719 people have died, 4,521 have been injured, and 441 are reported missing across all states and regions."

While visiting affected areas, officials identified significant engineering challenges. The Senior General noted that the widespread casualties were exacerbated by poor construction practices, with many buildings being built inadequately, making them highly vulnerable to natural disasters.
