Tha Htay Hydropower Project that can generate 386 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually has been completed by more than 70%, according to the Ministry of Information.
The project is being implemented by No.4 Construction of the Hydropower Implementation Department, on Tha Htay Creek, 12 miles Northeast of Thandwe in Rakhine State. The main dam of the project is gravel filled and it can store 0.696 million acre feet of water at full brim. The project has three 37-megawatt generators which can generate 386 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually.
The purpose of implementing the project is to boost power supply in Rakhine State and connect the national grid. At present, over 73.29% of the project has completed, and it is targeted to complete in 2025-2026 fiscal year. Thus, it will be the first hydropower plant in Rakhine State.
Union Minister for Electric Power U Thaung Han, together with the Officials from the Rakhine State Government, visited the Tha Htay Hydropower Project site on October 29.
The Union Minister left instructions on worksite safety measures, ensuring the project meets the set standards and long term durability. He called for efforts to complete the project as scheduled as it could generate local job opportunities.
He said that the government of Myanmar was taking measures to meet domestic electricity needs by tapping various energy sources. As such, less production cost and less State budgets had to be considered. Therefore, continued measures were being taken to generate hydroelectricity. However, systematic measures would be taken to ensure least environmental impact, he added.
